The car insurance group Diamond are urging women to take extra care to ensure their handbags are safe from thieves.
According to the specialist car insurer, more than 400,000 women, in the last 12 months, have returned to their cars to find them broken into and their handbags stolen.
The estimated cost of these thefts is £178 million pounds a year. Crooks are taking advantage of the easy pickings as women leave their handbags on show in their cars.
Further figures show that the average handbag is worth over £430. This can include the cost of repacing the bag, mobile phone, sunglasses, makeup, house keys and having door locks changed. Added to this is the cost of excess on insurance and the prosect of losing a no claims discount.
Women may just be dropping the kids off at school, park up for a few minutes, leave a handbag on show and come back to a broken window.
It only takes an opportunist thief a few seconds to smash and grab. In circumstances where you cannot take your handbag with you, lock it out of sight in the boot of the car.
