Vintage Beaded Handbags - A short History

posted on 11 December 2009 | posted in Handbag and fashion Articles

Originating over 200 years ago, beaded bags developed to become one of the most expensivve bags of their time due to the unique workmanship needed to create each individual bag. For example in the early 1800's a beaded bag would cost around $5. By the early 1900's the price would have risen to around $100, which at that time was a lot of money.

There are certain characteristics that help to tell the age of a beaded bag, such as the size of the beads. Bags from the mid 1800s were made with tiny fine beads, using about 1000 to the square inch. The theme of the motif has also changed over the years. In the early 1800s funeral scenes were popular but from 1820 onwards beautiful outdoor scenes depicting historical landmarks and romantic scenes became more fashionable. The design of these early bags consisted of three horizontal layers which were knitted into the bag. The bottom usually had a tassle in the middle or a fringe if the bag was square. The pattern at the top of the bag would compliment the design and the bag would close with a drawstring or clasp.

These beautiful were cherished and would be passed down to future gererations. If you are lucky enough to spot one of these genuine vintage creations at an antique fair or car boot sale, and its value has not been appreciated, grab it quick as it may be worth a small fortune.
